Collins Learning Editorial Intern – HarperCollins

‪‪We are looking for a capable and enthusiastic Editorial Intern to join us in the Editorial team within Collins Learning for 2 months initially, with the possibility of this being extended. The internship will start with immediate effect and the successful candidate will be supporting the Editors and Managing Editors in delivering our primary, secondary and international publishing programmes, and the Operations Manager in maintaining divisional process.

‪‪Main responsibilities

– Proof checking
– Digital-edition checking‪‪
– Testing new content packages within the learning platform on different devices
– Clearing permissions: text and image
– ‪‪Sending files to suppliers for correction, maintaining clear records in-house

Senior Lecturer in English Literature (c. 1350-1510) and Digital Humanities -Newcastle University

The School of English Literature, Language & Linguistics wishes to appoint a Senior Lecturer in English Literature (c.1350-1510) and Digital Humanities to develop the School’s expertise in Scholarly Editing and digital technologies and to build a partnership between the School and the Digital Institute at Newcastle University.

We are looking for candidates who have demonstrable expertise in English Literature (c. 1350-1510) and the Digital Humanities, and who are enthused by the possibilities of interdisciplinary research. A strong publication record and excellent research plans are essential, so too is a track record of delivering innovative and well-designed teaching. In addition, candidates must be able to demonstrate that they can both lead and work as part of a team, and make a dynamic contribution to the culture and management of the School.

Community Engagement Officer: RAF Stories – The Royal Air Force Museum

The Royal Air Force Museum is Britain’s national museum telling the story of the RAF through its people and collections. It has three sites (London, Cosford and Stafford) and operates a trading company which supplements its funding which comes principally from the Ministry of Defence.

We are looking for a highly organised, self-motivated individual with excellent stakeholder management and communication skills. You will work with our Technical Lead and third party agencies in developing ‘RAF Stories’ – a digital story collecting and sharing project which will be central to the Museum’s RAF Centenary celebrations and commemorations in 2018.

You will have experience working on oral histories projects within the culture and heritage sector. Specifically you will need expertise in managing and working with volunteers both online and face to face, producing high quality content that will enable the Museum to tell the RAF Story more effectively. In addition, you will be responsible for transforming this content into an interesting, exciting and engaging programme.

Penguin’s commercial fiction and non-fiction division Michael Joseph is looking for a Creative Metadata Assistant/Executive who knows what words people use to find books online and what words persuade them to click and buy.

This is an exciting, brand-new opportunity for someone looking to start a career in publishing. You’ll be responsible for reviewing the book copy and keywords that feed out to online retailers, ensuring our books are easy to find online and our copy echoes the conversations people are having around them.

Day-to-day you can expect to carry out a range of tasks: monitoring online charts, media reviews and customer conversations, updating metadata and copy, refreshing our backlist titles and experimenting. This will involve working closely with the editorial and the communications teams.

The role will suit someone willing to take risks and try different ways of working to discover what works best. You’ll be methodical as well as curious. You’ll be unafraid to get it wrong, but determined to do better next time. A fast learner, you’ll also have a creative flair for writing persuasive copy to give online readers what they really want.

Our trustees share a passion for the written word and for supporting participation through cultural engagement. Members of our current board of trustees are from across the UK and they act as our ambassadors around the country. Our board already has a great range of skills and experience. We are now looking to enhance these in the areas of publishing, libraries, impact and evaluation, HR, communications and finance. We also welcome applications from writers.

Fully Funded PhD Studentship: Cross-Language Digital Humanities: Cultural Data – Swansea University

Deadline: Tuesday 2nd May, 2017

We seek a PhD applicant (to enrol no later than 17 July 2017) in the area of Cross-Language Digital Humanities, to work on his/her chosen domain of cultural data. The successful candidate will be keen to work on a dataset or datasets of a type and scale which requires computational analysis, but which also demands cross-culturally and cross-linguistically informed understanding. You will work with researchers at Swansea University, based in the College of Arts and Humanities and Department of Computer Science, whose projects include experimental visual analysis of literary multi-translations corpora. The successful applicant will be the individual who proposes the most exciting and feasible project, as well as meeting all the other criteria.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Tom Cheesman (Department of Modern Languages) and Dr Robert Laramee (Department of Computer Science).
