Participants become authors at text-messaging event

Tim Etchells, the artist, performance maker and writer, will be launching a new text message performance – A Short Message Spectacle (SMS) – this Friday 7th May 2010.

A Short Message Spectacle will be an imaginary performance lasting 16 days, with each of its scenes described by text message, relayed as virtual events taking place through the day and night in diverse locations across an equally imaginary city. The audience for the work will be subscribers to a special phone number, and the events of the performance are summoned by text message alone, described and unfolding via a series of 160 character missives each day.

The performance, commissioned by Norfolk & Norwich Festival, takes place from 7th – 22nd May and participation is free.  The event enables participants to become imaginative co-authors and the landscape in which they live becomes a setting for and a part of the performance itself.

A Short Message Spectacle (An SMS) is the third SMS project launched by Tim Etchells – earlier SMS projects include Surrender Control (2001) and 39 Or So To Do (2008).

To sign up as an audience member for Short Message Spectacle, text NNF, your postcode, your age to 60777 (UK)  or +4460777 (Europe).
