FutureBook Innovation Workshop

The FutureBook Innovation Workshop in association with The Literary Platform has run annually for three years. We look at look at projects that are using technology new and exciting ways and anticipate how these might be relevant to the publishing world of the future. In previous years we have looked at augmented reality poetry from MIT, 3D sound featuring narration from Benedict Cumberbatch, interactive storytelling with A.L. Kennedy, and a whole host of other fascinating projects from those in and around the publishing industry.

For the 2013 event we ran the workshop as part of Digital Shoreditch, an annual celebration of the outstanding creative, technical and entrepreneurial talent of East London and Tech City. 100 people attended the half-day event event which took place at the  Brick Lane offices of Marketing magazine’s Digital Agency of the Year, LBi.

The event was  built around three themed sessions each consisting of 3-4 short showcase presentations followed by a chaired discussion with the presenters. These sessions were: ‘Innovations in Story-telling’ which looked at story-games , co-creating with children, and facial recognition software, ‘Selling Tales’ which looked at the opportunities and challenges presented to content-let businesses by emerging channels and business models, and ‘Post-Digital Innovation’ which looked at projects which use digital and network technology to enhance physical objects or experiences and featured a hardback book which spoke to the audience.

Speakers included LA-based, Pixar story consultant Bobette Buster, BAFTA shortlisted Alyson Fielding, Story Mechanic’s Simon Meek and HarperCollins Group strategy and digital Director, Nick Perrett.

The Literary Platform programmed the event, booked and briefed speakers, sourced the venue and delegate gift-bags, and ran the event on the day.
