Fiction Uncovered App

Production credits: Enhanced Editions
Launch date: 19 May 2011

Fiction Uncovered, is a major new promotion to support the UK’s best fiction writers. We’re kind of related to them so we have to be careful not to be too gushing about it – but Fiction Uncovered has released a really lovely, tie-in Fiction Uncovered 2011 App for iPhone and iPad which is being supported by iBookstore UK.

The eight Fiction Uncovered titles, announced last Thursday, now feature in a  free app created by Enhanced Editions for iPhone and iPad, carrying book extracts, synced audio readings, and video interviews with the selected authors and judges.

Readers are able to find extracts from each of the novels, exclusive author readings and interviews, and video footage of the judges talking about why they chose each title. The app also includes a number of extracts alongside audio versions which have been synchronized so users can swap from one to the other without losing your place. Titles link directly from the App to the iBookstore. iBookstore UK is also supporting Fiction Uncovered.

Readings and interviews with judges and authors (audio and video) were specially produced for the app by o productions feature in the free app, with extracts also made available to reader websites and publishers to help promote the eight titles, as well as being hosted at fictionuncovered.co.uk, youtube and vimeo. The Fiction Uncovered branding and design is by Sam Oakley (also behind the site design and visual identity for The Literary Platform).

The eight titles for the Fiction Uncovered 2011 were selected by a judging panel chaired by the writer Giles Foden (Professor of Creative Writing at University of East Anglia). He was joined by Damian Barr (writer and salonnière), Simon Burke (Campaign Buying Manager for Waterstone’s) and Sarah Crown (Literary Editor, Guardian Online).

The eight titles now go on to be part of a major promotion supported by retailers iBookstore, Waterstone’s, Amazon, Foyles, WH Smith, the Book Depository and the Book Partnership (reaching independent bookstores). The selection will also be promoted by the Reading Agency (reaching libraries and reading groups) and reader websites such as lovereading.co.uk and bookswarm.co.uk.

Fiction Uncovered also hosts a community website at www.fictionuncovered.co.uk which offers the eight selected writers – and an even broader group of writers through year-round recommendation and endorsement – a chance to reach wider audiences. Reading recommendations to date have come from writers including James Meek, Evie Wyld, Paul Murray, Matt Thorne, Tibor Fischer, Tessa Hadley, Alex Clark, Bernardine Evaristo and Nicholas Blincoe.

The eight titles selected for Fiction Uncovered 2011 are:

  • The Water Theatre by Lindsay Clarke (Alma Books)
  • The London Satyr by Robert Edric (Doubleday, Transworld)
  • Proof of Love by Catherine Hall (Portobello)
  • Night Waking by Sarah Moss (Granta)
