The Writing Platform project

The Writing Platform is a website and program of live events dedicated to arming writers with digital knowledge. thewritingplatform.com is a free online resource for all writers and poets – emerging, established, traditionally published, self published or not yet published –  who are looking for balanced and best practice information about writing in a digital age in order to inform their practice and career choices.

The project was conceived and created by The Literary Platform team with Kate Pullinger. The Writing Platform is funded by the National Lottery, and supported by Arts Council England (Grants for the Arts). It is run by The Literary Platform in association with Bath Spa University and also has the support of a number of other literary organisations including:

Literature Works, Geekcamp in association with The Reading Agency, The Curved House, if:Book, The Literary Consultancy, The National Academy of Writing, National Poetry Day, Portal Entertainment, Wattpad, Words of Colour Productions and Unbound.

The first live event was held in November 2012 at Rich Mix, London, and was attended by over 100 writers. The event was part fair and part conference and it offered writers a fantastic opportunity to network with writing organisations as well as each other. Subjects covered in the conference included: ‘Funding opportunities for writers’, ‘Copyright in the digital age’, ‘Digital publishing and a writers identity’, ‘Which writing platform?’, ‘Race and class in publishing’ and ‘Writing beyond the page’. The Writing Platform team are now working on two events for 2013 as part of the Mix Digital at Bath Spa and Durham Book Festival with New Writing North.

In early 2013 The Writing Platform received funding from the NALD Futures Fund to support two bursaries each bringing together one writer and one technologist to collaborate for a period of three months on a project of their choosing. You can read more about The Writing Platform Bursary supported by NALD Futures Fund here.

In 2015, the second bursary programme was supported by Creative Writing at Bath Spa University and Arts Council England (Grants for the Arts). Two writer-technologist partnerships were awarded with £4000 each and their projects launched at MIX 03: Writing Digital in July 2015. You can read more about the 2015 bursary programme here.

Since 2016 The Writing Platform has been co-hosted by Bath Spa University and Queensland University of Technology, and co-edited by Kate Pullinger and Donna Hancox.
