Literary Classics Reimagined

Modern technology has completely shaken up how we interact with each other and the world around us, and with this quirky reimagining of literary classics, FlipSnack takes a look at how technology might have also solved a few problems for beloved characters such as Oliver Twist and Holden Caulfield.

We took as inspiration a selection of children’s books and classic novels, stories that most of us are familiar with and can relate to. Juliet’s search for a soul mate would have been so much simpler with Tinder, while sharing his marvellous creations on Pinterest would have made Willie Wonka an internet celebrity.

This is the latest of several book-related digital projects that we’ve developed for FlipSnack. We’re always fascinated by the innovative ways in which technology and traditional media can intersect. Last year we created a Man Booker Prize prediction app, which attempted to guess the winner of the next prize by analysing data about previous winners.

We also recently carried out a study on the length of popular novels that have been published over the last 15 years and discovered that they’ve got 25% longer. Naturally, the classic stories we’ve looked at for Modern Day Classics might have been a lot shorter and less satisfying if the technology had been around when they were written, so maybe it’s a good thing it wasn’t.

So far, the response to the new project has been really positive, and a number of popular literary websites and online magazines have featured the illustrations.

We don’t want to give away too much information about what we’re up to next at FlipSnack – everyone loves a surprise after all. But just to give you a hint, we’re brainstorming a campaign that will shift the focus from books to magazines. We don’t yet know exactly what form it’s going to take, but as many writers would probably agree, often just throwing ideas around and seeing what happens is the most enjoyable part of the process.

Romeo & Juliet

No need for a plague on anyone’s house with Tinder. Juliet can skip all that swordplay and tragedy by simply swiping right for Romeo.

Oliver Twist

Revenge is a dish best served cold, just like workhouse gruel. Oliver’s caustic reviews on Trip Advisor really twist the knife.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

Every genius needs inspiration sometimes, and Willie Wonka finds what he’s after on Pinterest. Now he just has to cure the Oompa-Loompas of their chocolate habit.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

A leaf-only diet can become a little bland after a while. No wonder the Very Hungry Caterpillar decided to mix things up a little by switching to GrubHub.

The Lord of the Rings

No orcs, no spiders, no swamps – Frodo and Sam could have saved themselves a lot of time and trouble if they’d simply used Google Maps to find their way to Mordor.
