The Literary Platform at London Book Fair
The Publishing for Digital Minds conference kicked off London Book Fair 2014 today, Monday 7 April, with some great, thought-provoking talks and discussions leading us into the week. Check twitter’s hashtag #DigiConf14 if you’d like to get an overview of those discussions.
We’ve programmed a series of events during London Book Fair (April 7-10), including the tour for the 2014 British Council Young Creative Entrepreneurs, three industry seminars and a digital entrepreneur open session at the Book Fair. More details on each event are below and hopefully we’ll see some of you down at Earl’s Court or The Hospital Club on Thursday.
How will writers eat? The Debate about copyright and writing in the digital age

This Question Time style session will tease out the move nuanced elements of the copyright debate and examine the implications for creativity and business.
This seminar forms part of a Goldsmiths University project entitled: Whose book is it anyway?, IP, Collaborative Business Models and Questions of ethics and creativity in digital publishing, for CREATe. Speakers are:

China, Social Media and the Mobile Reading Revolution

This seminar will discuss the initial findings of an on-going twelve-month research project into the China market and Chinese social media channels. The research is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and is being undertaken by Nesta and The Literary Platform, in partnership the British Council and Douban, one of China’s biggest social media channels. After a short presentation of findings the seminar will open up to small panel to discuss issues raised by the research. Speakers are:

Pushing Creative Boundaries

Author and producer Jeff Norton constantly experiments and pushes the boundaries of form and business model. In this seminar for authors and publishers, Jeff will share his approach to maximising creativity and will give insight, ideas and advice to others to think beyond traditional models and scale up in new ways. Specifically Jeff will look at how he applies the Pixar creative process to writing and collaborating with others creatively.
British Council Young Creative Entrepreneurs UK visit
Digital Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year Award Open Session

Visitors to London Book Fair can hear the visiting group of British Council Young Creative Entrepreneurs present their business to a panel of expert judges at an open session. The judges (Anna Rafferty, Rohan Gunatillake, Octavio Kulesz and Julia Kingsford) will then select one of the YCEs as the winner of the British Council International Digital Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
The winner will be announced at the International Book Industry Excellence Awards in the evening of Tuesday 8 April and will then present their vision of the future at a special debate on the Future of Publishing to be held at The Hospital Club on Thursday 10 April.
Throughout the week of London Book Fair, the Literary Platform with the British Council has programmed a tour of events for the visiting YCEs. Highlights of the programme include meetings with TouchPress, Pottermore, Made in Me, Contentment and Dazed
