Figment wins LA Times Innovator’s Award

Figment, the online community for young readers and writers, is to receive the 2011 Los Angeles Times Book Prizes Innovator’s Award. The award highlights ‘cutting edge work to bring books, publishing, and storytelling into the future’, and was previously presented to Dave Eggers and Powell’s Books.

The Japanese phenomenon of fiction composed on mobile phones inspired Dana Goodyear, a staff writer at The New Yorker, and Jacob Lewis, the former Managing Editor at The New Yorker and Condé Nast Portfolio, to found Figment in 2010.

Since its launch little over a year ago, Figment has attracted more than 115,000 teenagers to join its growing online community. Once registered, members can use their computers or mobile phones to compose novels, short stories and poems, collaborate with other writers, and give and receive feedback. They can read the work of their peers and that of established writers and connect with each other to discuss and discover new stories and authors.

The award will be presented on 20 April 2012 at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.
