How writers can help create a new narrative form

In September, at a Foyles debate about the state of digital publishing, I sat at the far left edge of the stage. I was pleased to be there at all, because writers will and should have a say in the way storytelling develops on digital platforms.

At this stage in the evolution of lit apps (if I can call them that), everyone who is not a writer shares the same aim: to work out how to make money from screen-based text. Writers shouldn’t disapprove of this objective, but realistically we among the various interest groups are the most experienced at working for love. And personally, I love the potential that the technology has unleashed: I’ll write for next to nothing (as I do for my books), but not for any less than that.
