Christmas pop-up bookshops

With all the talk of publishers embracing direct-to-consumer selling this year, we’ve been interested to see lots of Pop-Up Bookshops popping up (sorry) everywhere before Christmas – recently spotted:

Redstone Press Annual Christmas Pop-Up Shop

For fourteen days only shoppers are invited into the world of Redstone Press who will be selling their beautiful and unique books and boxes, old and new, at special prices.

Pick up all our new publications including The Redstone Language Diary 2013, Mexico: Macabre, our best-selling Psychogames, The Redstone Inkblot Test and have the opportunity to shop from our archive. Book lovers can choose from a huge array of out of print publications including many first editions of early Redstone boxes.

They’ll also be selling spectacular prints from Russian Children’s books of the 1930’s and beautiful Rorschach Inkblot prints make perfect Christmas presents, framed or unframed – as well as surprising objects including skulls, Mexican wrestling masks and many other unique Christmas gifts.

Redstone will also be hosting a number of events in the evenings where shoppers can relax and browse (with a glass of something and a mince pie!)

Life Is Not Enough

Life Is Not Enough is a limited edition picture story book by Irish artist Joe Duggan sold exclusively on his website and through a specifically designed shop on Broadway Market, East London.

Duggan’s first published book portrays a wandering soul, who continually seeks meaning in his life whilst grappling with love, marriage, and misadventure.

Uniquely portrayed through sparse text and a series of beautiful photographs, Duggan and friends enact the tale on a self-built theatrical set. A mini epic presenting a humorously bleak and cartoon-like vision of the human experience, the book suggests an existence governed by an unconscious overlord; a force that neither judges nor designs, but just is.

Duggan said “It is something I have wanted to do for years. I believe people want intelligent work, this is what I have always tried to do.”

Known for his large scale photographs and installations, this is Duggan’s first published book. From its inception at an artist residency in Newfoundland, Canada, Duggan has spent almost four years completing this work.

Life Is Not Enough is a beautifully designed, hardback and clothbound limited edition book. Each copy will be numbered and signed by Joe Duggan.

Shop: 16 Broadway Market, London E8 4QJ – Open Daily from 31 November 2012 10am – 6pm

And we just missed these two which sounded great!

Unbound Pop Up Bookshop

We missed this – but caught news of it on twitter – a pop up bookshop at the The Society Club, Soho mid-December.

Penguin Pop Up Shop

Just missed this on 13th December – a Penguin Pop Up Shop at Westfield London which was selling a beautiful range of Penguin books and gifts. The portable shop made its debut this summer.

From the Penguin blog:

“Designed by the brilliantly talented Shell Thomas and brought to life by producer Mick Glover, the look of the shop has gone through a number of transformations, from a standalone bookcase for readers to browse, to what it is now – a transportable, scooter-ised shop-front.”
